What are the dangers to me and my business?
The Internet and the business world are full of viruses, worms,
browser hijackings, trojans, spyware, phishing, and other traps
attempted to steal information from you or to destroy your data.
Viruses
One of the oldest forms of malware. Viruses often damage data and can
easily spread to other computers. Antivirus software can detect and
block them.
Worms
These attempt to spread from computer to computer, often through email
but sometimes across internal computer networks. Antivirus software and
firewalls can detect and block them.
Browser Hijacking
Once a user agrees to install unknown software, the new
software hijacks the web browser and constantly steers it to the web
site of the hijacker's choice. Hijackings are often tough to get rid of.
They automatically re-install themselves every time the computer is
rebooted.
A real-life example of a
hijacked browser home-page.
Here, your new (hijacked) home-page wants you to install MORE of software that could include
a trojan. Your computer could easily be taken over by a
stranger if you install the software as instructed. This page was taken
from a actual client's PC.
Trojans
Trojans deceive the victim, making him think the software he's
installing is something different than it actually is. Most trojans are
extremely dangerous. They can steal information or passwords, as well as
take over your computer, allowing it to be used remotely by another
person. Trojans can be detected and stopped by antivirus software.
Spyware
Initially a nuisance, spyware is now rampant and is found on 70% of home
PCs. In its least-damaging form, it causes unwanted pop-up ads to
appear. Eventually, spyware will make a computer completely unusable.
Spyware can be detected and stopped by anti-spyware software.
Phishing
Phishing frauds attempt to trick the victim into giving out private
information, such as Bank Account Numbers and Social Security Numbers.
Phishing emails often claim to come from trusted institutions such as
your bank. Anti-phishing software is just becoming available. All
computer users should be aware of the
warning signs of phishing.
