Avoiding malware: viruses, worms, trojans, and spyware, involves a few basic rules:

1) Don’t accept things from strangers. Only accept a download to your computer if you:
A)
Trust the web site that you are on.
B)
Manually typed the web address in your web browser.
If a web site tries to download something to your computer that you didn’t ask for, close the download window and leave the web site immediately.

2) Don’t open an email attachment unless you:
A) Know EXACTLY what the attachment is.
B) Were expecting to receive the attachment.
C)
Manually scan the attachment for malware before opening it.

Web sites can be faked. Return email addresses can be faked. Web links can lie about where they are taking you. You can be told you are being taken to your Bank’s web site when, in reality, you are on a fake web site that just LOOKS like your Bank’s.

Email return addresses can be faked. You might receive an email from your mother or daughter, but, in reality, their address has been faked and that attachment that says, “Here’s our latest family pictures.” is actually a virus, worm, or trojan.

3) Treat a computer like the telephone. You wouldn’t give out your credit card number to somebody who called you and asked for it.  If you didn’t “make the call” (by manually going to a trusted web site), then don’t trust anything that a web site offers you.
